Side effects of Steroids

Steroid usage is without a doubt increasing at an alarming rate, with so many people now abusing these substances to build a better physique they often forget about the dangers involved with steroid usage. There are many different side effects than may occur from steroid usage, some side effects are not so serious while others are, and some are temporary while others may be permanent.

Side effects from Steroids can depend on a number of things such as what steroid is being used and at what dosages. Certain Steroids are known for being mild with very few side effects while others are known for the huge amount of side effects that can occur while using them.

Before we get into the list of side effects, lets first go over some interesting facts about side effects related to Steroid usage.

  • Not everyone gets side effects. Some users hardly ever see any side effects while more sensitive users always get side effects.
  • Just because you don’t get any noticeable side effects during your cycle does not mean you are not causing damage to your body.
  • Some side effects may only take effect years later even if you discontinue using steroids permanently.
  • Side effects are almost always dosage related. If you are going to abuse a substance do not be surprised when all the nasty side effects arise during the cycle.

The list of Steroid Side Effects is a long one, below you will find the most common side effects.

steroid side effectsHigh Blood Pressure: This is quite a common side effect with Steroid usage. Usually it’s not a serious issue due to the fact your blood pressure will only be high during the cycle and not for long periods of time. High blood pressure usually occurs from an increase in water retention due to the extra Estrogen floating around the blood stream. Fortunately high blood pressure can be lowered or even prevented by using an anti-estrogen during the cycle to keep estrogen within normal ranges.

Liver Damage: Usually not a common side effect, which can occur from abusing oral Steroids. Orals are chemically altered to allow them to pass through the liver without being broken down, this alteration in the chemical structure makes oral Steroids put strain on the liver and when used in high dosages for long periods of time this strain can lead to liver damage and can cause issues such as jaundice. Many bodybuilders and athletes choose not to use oral Steroids for this exact reason.

Acne: A very common side effect especially when using highly androgenic Steroids such as Testosterone, Dianabol and Anadrol. Highly Androgenic Steroids cause an increase in sebum secretion which in turn leads to oily skin, this can then result in acne. Some individuals are more prone to acne than others and cant do much to prevent acne during a cycle except to avoid highly Androgenic Steroids and to rather opt for low Androgenic Steroids such as Winstrol, Equipoise, Anavar etc…

Gynecomastia: More commonly referred to as Male breasts. Gynecomastia is caused when there is an excess of estrogen in the body, this estrogen binds to the estrogen receptors and forms breast tissue. This side effect also depends on the user, some people never get this side effect no matter how much estrogen is in their blood stream, while others suffer from Gynecomastia from using low doses of Steroids. Taking an anti-estrogen can help prevent this or avoiding Steroids that aromatize.

Male Pattern Baldness: Also known hair loss, occurs in men who are genetically predisposed to this side effect. Chances are if you are affected by this side effect you would have lost your hair anyway, Steroid usage just sped up the process.

Other Side Effects:

  • Aggression
  • Testicular shrinkage
  • Low libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Depression
  • Heart enlargement
  • High cholesterol

Other steroid side effects also exist, however I am only going over the ones that are common. If you plan on using Steroids you should do your research and find out about all the side effects and how you can reduce or prevent them. While all Steroids are bad for your health there are certain Steroids which are safer than others. Generally low Androgenic Steroids are always a safer choice.
